Speaking of self-sufficiency

Could we? General Fertig's people did in the Mindanao jungle.

...curtain rods were cut into pieces and shaped to provide ammunition for .30 caliber rifles, steel was shaved from automobile springs and curled to make recoiling springs for rifles ...

Thanks for that link! I had never heard of him before, what a stunning achievement - and tactically smart too: ...it is obvious that the odds are against us and we will not consistently win, but if we are to win only part of the time and gain a little each time, in the end we will be successful. Incrementalism works.

Fertig was a man to be admired.

You might want to read Griffin's "Behind th Lines." It centers on USFIP, and, though fictionalized, is an outstanding treatment of the subject.

For that matter, a guy can get a good -- and damned entertaining --handle on the Pacific war with Griffin's "The Corps" Series. He gives a lot of space to the grunt and his guns, and I've yet to catch him in a technical firearms error. He even makes you laugh while he's explaining that puzzle of attaching the M1 Carbine sling to the oiler.
